No "quit" in this team's DNA

Between last season and this season, I guess I've gotten used to experiencing close games where Georgia is going to either make a play and win. Or not.

Let's face it. The '21 and '22 seasons were an indulgent time to be Georgia fans. We were putting teams away early because we were stacked with 4 and 5 stars on the three deep.

Lately, that's just not the case. But having those back to back National Championships...I just breathe easier in close ones like Saturday against Ole Miss.

Of course it helps when we pull it out. But it's also nice to reflect back on so many plays that we made that slowly tilted the game in our favor.

26 of 31 for 289 yds, 59 yds rushing, 5 total TDs

The first one that comes to mind is the 4th and 1 play with a minute left in the third. We had crossed midfield and just had to go for it. McCray off right tackle with Ole Miss defenders in our backfield. He kept his legs churning and found a way to advance the chains.

Every tipped/blocked pass in those three 4th quarter stands. Bell and Branch turning easy 8 yard gains into 15+ yard gains and moving the chains, which in turn equaled burning more clock. Gunner, a perfect 12 for 12 in the second half!

This team just doesn't have any quit in their DNA. So while games can be stressful, they can be more enjoyable to reflect back on.

When we win. And that's what we did against Ole Miss. Made the plays to win it!

Other weekend observations:

• Billy....Gonzales will be the head coach opposite Smart in this year's WLOCP. Napier got his last sloppy win Saturday. The ax followed on Sunday.
• Vandy! Wow. They're a complete team that are fun to watch. It's hard to comprehend a 6 win Commodore team in mid-October.
• Missouri goes to Nashville for a huge game against the Commodores Saturday. (Say that repeatedly until your brain can wrap itself around it.)
• So what's our most difficult test remaining in the regular season? Will the gators be rejuvenated? Does Texas have it's shit together by the time they visit Sanford? Right now, my money is on Georgia Tech.
• The week after Tech, does Georgia return to the Benz for the SECCG? Half way through the regular season, the SEC has seven one loss or better teams - A&M, Bama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Oklahoma. 

A recap and a look at Ole Miss

So yesterday I had an inner debate as to whether I ever recapped the Auburn win here in this space. At first I was sure that I did, but I was wrong. You see, I had my scheduled colonoscopy on Monday. So between the awful prep on Sunday and the recuperation on Monday afternoon, any writing slipped away like a drip from the anesthesia line. So here's my look back at the win on the plains...

It was a fumble. Use your stored up toilet paper abuurn fans to soak up those tears, because even if it had been a touchdown instead, you would've lost 20-17. We owned y'all when the game mattered. Kick rocks.

Need more amateur analysis, here is the latest 4th & 3 Dudes podcast. Now, onto Ole Miss.

May be our toughest test yet. This new quarterback Kiffin has under behind center is a legit threat through the air (1200+ yards and 7 TDs with just one INT) and on the ground (61 rush attempts for an average of 4.61 yards each).

In short, the defense can't take 29+ min off to start this one. And the offense has to emerge from the locker room in the first half as well.

It's the middle of October. At this point I know only two things about the 2025 Georgia Bulldogs tackle football team. 1) We are a good, not great team. Sure, we'll get better as the season progresses. We've seen that every year under Smart. How much better? That's a much harder question. And 2) We will fight until the end. We're a team that continues to mirror their head coach's fire in the belly. We saw it first hand Saturday night in Auburn. While the tigers rolled over in the wake of their coach's poor mouthing, them Dawgs was hell.

So who knows what we'll see on Saturday against the Rebels. Protect the football and we've got a great chance to pull off another great win. Disrupt their quarterback enough and we may see Kiffin start to play QB roulette.

I just love watching this team fight. Go Dawgs!

Post-Kentucky - The Facts of Life

Great SEC win on Saturday. It was Homecoming. The band played a lot. The game was in control early. And few if any injuries.

So another great day to be a Bulldog!

On offense, not much went wrong except for a couple interceptions. Gunner seemed in sync and had nearly 200 yards passing while averaging 6 yards per rush as well. Bowens led the way on the ground, Frazier looked good bouncing back from that critical fumble against Bama, and Walker looked good late. McCray also got some runs from non-short yardage situations.

Defensively we looked more in sync as well. Much more. Last week Jon Smith had Brent Rollins on Dawg Dispatch and they talked about how this roster as a whole is not filled with NFL talent like years past and how that is an adjustment for a coach like Schumann. So I was watching Saturday through that lens and it really made sense. We're not as fast to the ball in spots, and Saturday we got our first sack of the season by a defensive lineman - Nnamdi Ogboko. We are who we are and that's just the facts in 2025.

If anything it's something to watch. Coaches are going to have to work extra hard to make sure they have the right guys in and the right plays called on defense. It worked on Saturday as we gave a struggling offense an opportunity to continue to struggle. Kentucky limped to 225 yards passing and only had 45 yards on the ground. Their second touchdown came late against guys trying to gain some on field experience. (And to be fair, that probably wouldn't have had a chance to happen without a Puglisi interception.)

Special teams had a couple mistakes, like a block in the back on a Branch return. But had its usually stellar moments like a Thorson punt downed on the 1 yard line by Humphreys, who just batted it out of bounds instead of trying to field it and potentially letting it leak into the endzone.

Yep, great day. Onto Auburn!

On fumbles, dropped pass, botched 4th and short, etc.

Let's bullet this out as I'm going to try and keep it brief.

• First, congrats to the Tide on a helluva win. Not the same team we saw week one, and that's a credit to their coaching as well as their team leadership.
• We're reminded that any loss falls first and foremost at the head guy's feet. He and Schu looked dazed and confused by Grubb and DeBoer's gameplan.
• You don't give up eight consecutive third down conversions without diggin a hole for the rest of the way.
• I lost count, but at some point they had more than double total plays in the first half. That's taking a lot of gas out the tank of your defense and putting a lot of pressure on the entire team.

  

  Gaining the edge (via)

• Don't think we saw Frazier after that fumble. Don't expect that will continue, but with Bowens' performance I would expect 33 to be the starter this weekend.
• The Taylor drop was a gut punch. I'm sure the kid is beating himself up, but from what I've heard and seen he seems the type of player that can put it in the rearview quick. It was a great call, incredible route and that just shows he's gonna make a lot of plays for us down the road.
• Overall, if asked I'd give the offense more than a passing score, especially considering how they closed the gap some on total plays and time of possession.
• A few quick positives: 6.9 yards per carry! Wow. Special teams continue to be special. And sophomore OLB Quintavious Johnson looked special as well. I like that despite getting flagged for a horse collar tackle, coaches stuck with him. Couple plays later he makes a key tackle for loss.

As for the decision not to kick the field goal. I can be convinced it was the right call. I would've called for the kick, but I am not Kirby Smart and he is not me. Thank God! And I can be convinced that going with the hurry up was the right call. But given the personnel on the field, I think a pass there or running behind Morris in the least is the correct Monday Morning call.

Lastly, for those that consider the season over, I for one am much more concerned with Kentucky this weekend. Perhaps you are fretting too much about it being Alabama that we lost to again. I was there where you are when I went to sleep Saturday night. Worry about them later.

Make em quit! (explicit post, caution for sensitive clickers)

It's only Wednesday. I have a podcast to do tonight and I'm already tired of talking. Tired of typing.

Tired of losing to these assholes.

And that's just me. How do you feel about the state of our series against the Tide? And can you imagine how Kirby feels?

Our head guy was 0-1 against Alabama as a player. As our head coach, he is currently 1-6.

The one win was one we'll never forget. One we celebrated like malnourished and incredibly parched animals devouring a steak and goblet of wine. Crazed and deranged, but so goddamn happy!

Kirby likely felt the same, with the added cherry on top being it went down with his mentor/rival/former boss on the opposite sideline.

Shit, I got sidetracked and all glory-eyed. Sorry. Because those are not these teams. These teams are not even the same as the teams that met last year in Tuscaloosa. Jalen Milroe used last year's win against Georgia to add a few zeros to his paychecks. (I guess Carson Beck did the same somehow...)

Back on track...I don't just want a win. I want to dominate in the trenches. I want Gaston thirty yards downfield shoving a d-end into the dirt. I want Gunner lowering a shoulder into a Tidy linebacker just for the blessed feeling of it being 2nd and 2 and not 2nd and 4. I want Kirby to throw his visor/headset not just in pure unadulterated frustration, but in all out fucking jubilation!

Cash Jones being hoisted in the endzone by Micah Morris like the angel he is. CJ Allen breaking hearts and Chris Cole hitting a running back so goddamn hard it takes the running right out of him. He's just a back, laying on the ground. Hoping he's injured just enough that he can stay on the sideline until their team bus is warmed up.

Yes, make em quit. Make them cry for their mommas. Make them be glad they're losing so they're happy there's less potential of playing us again in Atlanta. Make em act like Auburn fans and turn their sad September eyes towards basketball season.

Tennessee...whew!

What a game on Saturday huh? Aguilar is a couple steps up from that other kid whose name I can't pronounce. Or type.

So what did we learn? I'll take a stab at a list. 

• We're a good team. We're built different than previous versions of a Smart led team. But we can compete against this 2025 schedule and beyond I think.
• We're a young team. I believe we are deep, but when you go on the road in the SEC and that roster gets trimmed down, it exposes your youth. Proud of the way Kirby and Co. rallied them into a team that could fight back.
• We're a lucky team. That's a pretty good kicker (went 3/3 the week prior with a long of 53). I don't think the false start penalty mattered. Good snap, good hold. Bad swing.
• The OL especially struggled. I thought the play calling got too conservative after that amazing drive to open the second half. But on the other hand we seemed to click in 13 personnel. I hope to see that a lot going forward.
• In fact, I would bet if we looked at Reddell's participation, most of his snaps would land in the 4th quarter. Barbour we know is done for the year, and Elyiss Williams made the trip but I don't recall seeing him. I'll re-watch tonight.
• Regardless, with three tight ends and one back in, we really found success both on the ground and off play action especially. I'd love to see more of this going forward. Even with Barbour out, I think we are deep enough at tight end and I think the backs we have would thrive in it.
• If there is one thing thing that surprised me more than anything else, it was our defensive backs, especially Ellis Robinson IV. We know they're going to end up in one on one a lot to start games against Heupul offenses. Even as Schu and Kirby began to put the "roof" back on with our safeties we continued to struggle in 50/50 matchups.
• Also worth noting, Tenn's receivers are better this year. That fact plus Aguilar's arm and composure caught us just as off guard as our secondary.

All things considered, we got to the season's first bye week at 3-0. Just as we hoped. So there is that. Most importantly, the coaches have some good film on their young guys and we should be healthier at OL before the tilt against the Tide.

The OL, Gunner and episode 21

I was one who asked for patience with the offensive line before the start of the season. But after Saturday's showing against the Governors, I was disheartened.

After re-watching and seeing some analytical posts, I feel much better. It's a unit with a LOT of talent and potential. It's there, just not consistent yet. I stand by my point in the podcast that they are not up to the standard we need for an SEC road game, especially. However, I think we'll see growth sooner rather than later.

If you've joined the Bulldog Bourdon Social Club, Jon makes some great points about Gunner in the VIP lounge. I agree that QB1 won't be hemmed in on Saturday, and I think the stats and, more importantly, the scoreboard will reflect that.

Regardless, we'll rely on our defense and special teams a lot this season. Go Dawgs! Let's beat the Vols...again!

Transitioning from week one to week two

Below is the latest episode of 4th & 3 Dudes. You can like, share and subscribe in your favorite podcast feeder and on YouTube. But first, a couple thoughts.

Last week the coaches let Gunner hold the reins for three quarters. I make a point in this episode that when Pugs came in the offense really didn't miss a beat. So I wonder if this week the split will be closer to 50/50. Even better, would like QB2 and even QB3 to get some game time experience.

Overall I think we all agree that its great to see so many young players get time on the field. I mean, Elyiss Williams caught a touchdown pass in his first collegiate game!

But like Nama said, at the end of the day, we really just want to end the game against the Governors without injuries. A healthier team heading to Knoxville would make us all happy. Especially the coaches.

Plus, episode 19 of 4th & 3 Dudes at the bottom, where Nama and I discuss how we think the team shapes up against last season's stats and the 2025 schedule. (Cord had a shit week and couldn’t join us. Not sure what that means for his Oregon State Beavers as they go up against Cal tomorrow night. We’ll see.)

But first, a few additional thoughts on our Dawgs as well as the weekend slate.

Special teams. I make this point in the episode below, but wanted to emphasize it a little more here. Hopefully it doesn’t happen often tomorrow, but when we line up to punt it won’t be a good time to leave your seat to go to the restroom. I’m going to play close attention to who the coaches are trusting in this phase of the game. Same for the return game.

Special teams can make or break a game, as we know. There are a lot of position battles to pay attention to tomorrow: OL, CB, Safety. Really every position has a depth chart to be chiseled out during these first two games before the trip to Knoxville. We need to include special teams in that focus for the sole purpose of flipping the field at keys moments later in the season, getting the offense in better field position with punt returns, protecting our kickers to do their job, etc etc.

The weekend looks glorious too. I'm looking forward to GA Tech at Colorado tonight. Tomorrow I'm excited to see what Fran Brown's fightin' Orangemen can do against Tennessee. Our Dawgs in the middle of the afternoon along with Bama going to Tallahassee. Tomorrow night Clemson hosts LSU in the fight for the rights to the term Death Valley. And Sunday I'll be watching both VA Tech at South Carolina and Notre Dame at Miami. I'll Monday night's tilt between TCU and North Carolina on hold and see if something better opens up.

Talking season blues

Still reeling over Sunday's Failure at Foley. Coach Johnson has me ever hopeful. But we have to be able to find better pitching than that. Ugh.

But a CWS run was a needed break from CFB talking season. It's a tough time to be a fan. Gone are the days when you just had to worry about how many days were left until kickoff. Now there's that, and all of the many and varied opinions about what is best for the sport we so dearly love.

Coach Smart took aim last week at the transfer portal. And rightly so. Like him, I hold an SEC Championship in very high regard. And while his staff and players were preparing for the 2024 SECCG, they were also dealing with players, both publicly and privately, readying to jump ship.

Can your Coach Goff era mind even imagine such a thing?! The playoff bracket hadn't even been dealt with and players are looking for "better" opportunities elsewhere.

Let's be honest with ourselves. We know Kirby Smart isn't leaving Athens for the NFL, much less any other program. But I can totally see the 24/7/365 recruiting of both future and current players, managing all of the egos, NIL deals, etc....driving him away. And I wouldn't blame him.

Speaking of the CFB playoff bracket, we do see one positive change. Unfortunately the talk of expanding the format from 12 to 16 seems to gain more traction, but at least they have fixed the seeding problem. Now the top four teams will get the top four seeds (hard to believe it took even this long to figure that out). 

Many years ago I wrote here that I just wished the SEC would secede from the NCAA and have it's own championship. Why does it need the Atlantic to Pacific conference or that diluted mixture of midwestern powerhouses and downright wannabes? Bring a nice cupcake in mid-season, keep any cross-conference rivalries if you want. Then make a 10 game gauntlet by GOD! schedule and rake in all the Mickey money you need want.

Oh well, just some words to dream by...

I am excited about the 2025 version of our Georgia Bulldogs that is shaping up. I bet Kirby already has the right message for them to start the season. Keep striking through those summer calendar days, then let's get after that ass!

4th & 3 Dudes - a CHAMPIONSHIP episode!

We discuss the epic, drama filled and RESILIENT win by the Dawgs over Texas! Then we delve into playoffs - scenarios, injuries, what makes sense and what doesn't. Go Dawgs!

SECCG Preview: Don't replicate. Just dictate.

It's Texas. Again.

With (almost) everything on the line, Texas comes to Atlanta to face a Georgia team that bullied them in Austin.

Both teams have (likely)^* secured a spot in the CFB Playoffs. So, just go out and win right?

Yes, but as we're all hearing, it's hard to beat a team twice in one season. Some recent examples:

In 2017 Georgia "got the dogshit" beat out of them on the plains by Malzahn's Tigers. Couple weeks later, it was ALL Dawgs in Atlanta. In 2021, Alabama jumped up and surprised Georgia in the SECCG, only to see the Dawgs take care of business with it all on the line in Indy.

This is a little different with the Dawgs having slowed the Longhorns' roll to a stop in Austin back in October. So now we're avenging our road win.

You can throw most everything out the window. I think this game comes down to these two points:

1. Which team runs the ball better consistently. We stuffed their run game on Oct 19th. Wisner had two yards per carry less than his season average. For us, Etienne had a great game, but even though he's upgraded to questionable, I doubt we see him. We need Frazier to have a night!
2. Protect the Mercedes Benz' real estate. Both teams turned the ball over back in October. Longhorns' were more costly. Don't give them a short field. Live to play another series and let Thorson do his thing when necessary.

I recall being very underwhelmed by the Longhorns' offensive line after the first meeting. Perhaps that was mostly due to our Muschamp-infused defensive gameplan, because they have played much better in recent weeks. Especially in College Station last week. They've reasserted their ground attack, which could mean Sark goes earlier to Arch Manning to see how we handle the RPO. Who knows.

But we do know it's going to be hard to replicate what happened in Austin. But that doesn't mean we can't dictate what happens tomorrow in Atlanta. GATA and Go Dawgs!

Initial thoughts on Texas Dos

(No, I'm not here this morning to discuss Disney's Show on Brackets. We can talk about that when it matters - Sunday afternoon.)

It's hard to come up with anything we could sink our teeth into. Mainly, because if we've learned anything this season, Georgia has a knack for starting perilously slow. Many times it's the entire team (Kentucky, Bama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Tech). Other times it's just the offense (Clemson, Texas).

In Austin, we punched them in the mouth. No, the offense wasn't blowing fuses on the scoreboard. But a 23-0 lead at halftime doesn't just come from their QBs on the sideline looking like they are deer stuck in the headlights.

So I think we're in for a closer match on Saturday at 4pm in the Benz. From what I can tell, their offensive line play (which was abysmal in Austin) has improved. Some. If our defensive front can create something similar to the chaos they did in Austin, that would be a good place for us to start constructing some keys to this all important SEC Championship Game victory.

"What's the good word?" Dominance.

Why do Tech fans hate us so much?

19-3.

The Drought Breaker

That's Georgia's record versus little brother since Coach Mark Richt took over in 2001. He then went on to dominate this "rivalry" game to the tune of 13-2. And this is your daily reminder that CMR never , ever lost at his home away from home - Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Kirby is 6-1. With a win Friday night, he'll be one win short of tying the longest streak in the series which belongs to the Jackets at 8 games. "The Drought Breaker", Theron Sapp, helped end that streak in 1957. 

In essence, this rivalry was set on its ear once Vincent Joseph Dooley was hired in 1964. Ever since, Georgia coaches have made a living out of beating Tech, only Donnan has had a losing record in the series. Even Goff went 5-2!

While official record books have the series in Georgia's favor 71-41-5, Dawg fans prefer Coach Magill's 71-39-5. Tech played football at home in 1943-44 while Georgia men were abroad saving the world from sprecking the deutch. Here, the BDB staff holds the series count at 72-38-5. Because Jasper's knee was DOWN GODDAMMIT!!

Either way, the good word is definitely DOMINANCE. Go Dawgs! Tuck fech.

Hate week - signature wins and early thoughts

I've made no secret that I have not been impressed by Miami this season. But that is the North Avenue Trade School's signature win. They beat the Hurricanes a few weeks ago 28-23 at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field that Coach Mark Richt owns and drove his Ford F150 through for a decade and a half.

Most notably, this is the game where Coach Brent Key and his staff established a two QB system in King/Philo. Haynes King was coming back from an injury, but Aaron Philo had showed them something the week before in a loss at VA Tech. He didn't have a great game coming off the bench against the Hurricanes, but had himself a terrific night last week against the mighty Wolf Pack.

Anyway, they found a rhythm substituting their signal callers and Buster Faulkner called a great game in taking down an undefeated and, quite frankly, underwhelming Miami team.

Meanwhile, what is Georgia's signature win? Texas on the road or Tennessee at home? Whichever, I'd also put Clemson (neutral site) ahead of Miami (homeish, also in Benz Dome).

At home. Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium (that is not named for a foreign car brand). At night. I expect a strong fight from the Jackets. Key has them at least willing to do football type things that Collins' squads found elusive - tackling, running fast, blocking, tackling. 

But still, we should stomp these jokers! Go Dawgs!

Chaos theory and vegan nerds

Well, this didn't age well. But really, who knows how this college football season will end up.

As college football fans, we don't root for teams other than our own. But we fervently root for chaos. The more chaotic the better. So Saturday night did not disappoint.

And to this point I need to give credit where it's due. I was against expanding the playoffs (and am still reluctant to embrace it fully) because I was worried it would dilute the regular season.

For 2024, it definitely hasn't. It's actually expanded the scope of what is relevant.

Get a BIG neck. Eat a steak nerds! - Erk Russell, probably

I actually switched over to the Indiana game Saturday at times just to check in. At least, I did until they were officially wetting the bed. Any previous season, I doubt that happens. And I bet many of you can say the same.

I've been telling people for weeks, now the only way to ensure the CFB Playoff committee can't screw you over (like last year) is to make the SEC Championship Game. Win, you get a bye. Lose, you've proven you are the second best team in the nation's best conference.

So we've moved from worrying if there will be three or four SEC teams in the playoff, to which SEC newbie will meet us in Atlanta.

For now, couldn't care less. That's something to think about on Saturday. It's Tuck Fech week! GATA!

When anxiety gives way to Eagerness

You're having a nice meal in a very nice restaurant. It hasn't been perfect, but the company at the table is fun and engaging. Sure, you've had better meals. But it's a great evening and you won't have to do the dishes. The bar has a terrific array of bourbons. The wife is happy with her wine selection. Then...

CRACK! You bite down on something, a tooth crumbles and you just scream.

Life is pain. Mileage may vary.

Our Dawgs are out of sync, and almost out of time as well.

Yep. I think Saturday night was the first game in a while I didn't enjoy. Well, beyond the opening moments. After that it was a nightmare.

Sure, Tuscaloosa sucked. But we showed fight. Even a weird story like Jekyll & Hyde has some thrilling moments weaved into the insanity.

But Oxford man...no answers. No clue. No way. It was mistake after mistake where you just wanted to be able to take a knee the entire 4th stanza and get the hell out of there.

Yet, once they had their second chance to storm the field and it was finally over, I could breathe easier. I still believe these are the best of times. I matriculated during an era when our best season (by far) was a Citrus Bowl trip. I remember leaving the stadium in Donnan's first game, an 11-7 loss to Southern Mississippi, we saw a kid holding up his free t-shirt for attending the game and setting it on fire!

I can take this and roll with it. Yes, it's your individual prerogative to call for a new quarterback, a new head coach (!!), a new coordinator. We got pantsed by Kiffin and you can be butthurt about it. But would you rather be a Seminole fan about now?

Didn't think so. Part of me was anxious about what we might see when the hypefulled up volunteers come rolling into town tomorrow. But I'm now eager, not anxious.

The whole team looked out of sync Saturday night in Oxford. Tanner mentioned on yesterday's podcast, it felt like the coaches had no confidence. The line can't block, the quarterback can't throw, the receivers can't catch. Jesus Christ on a bicycle! You may be sick of screen passes, but what is Bobo to do?

Punt. Okay, now let's do the defense....

Nope, that's enough. Let's move forward. Because whether you hate this team or you're sticking by them, we should all be able to agree that there's one team in the nation no one wants to play when their backs are against the wall - Kirby Smart's Georgia GotDamn Bulldogs!

They comin'!

Let them bring their boxes of Franzia, sing their strangely semi-fictional fight song, and talk about the days when Bill Clinton was misusing cigars and Tom Hanks was desperately trying to save Private Ryan from Nazi controlled Europe. I'm eager to see how we handle another strong defense. I'm eager to see how well the crowd affects their ability race the play clock. I'm eager to see Coach Strickland grab and struggle to hold Kirby's belt. I'm eager to see how the team responds. And by God, I'd love to see Thorson use another gap wedge right leg to paint their offense into a super tight coffin corner!!

I've mentioned how this team appears to lack a leadership that we've grown accustomed to seeing the last few years. Well, it's time to step up. It's getting late and the committee is seeing longer shadows. Let's tee it up 'tween the hedges and give them something to think about!
