The 8th Annual Bowl Pool - Another Festivus Miracle!

The brain trust at ESPN has spoken and matched all of the teams up for us. So it's time to select the winners and see who comes out on top.

PASSWORD = Festivus

It all starts December 16th with Grambling vs NC A&T in the Celebration Bowl. It ends in The Benz with the Rose and Sugar winners. Should be quite the ride. So gather round the table and let's begin with the Airing of Grievances!

Annual Bowl Pool - Festivus is back!

In the long storied history of the blog's annual bowl pool, I've never won. Maybe the seventh time is a charm.

Regardless, we're getting the pole out of the crawl space and meeting at the Costanza's for dinner after the Airing of Grievances. Click the link and the password is "JazzHands". Then simply create your entry and join Kramer on The Strike line.

For you noobs...a historical catch you up. Please make your checks out to The Human Fund.

Sixth Annual Bowl Pool - The Feats of Strength

Previously known as #Festivus4TheDawgNus, this bowl pool is the only one you'll find that is brave enough to drag the Festivus Pole out of the crawl space and cheers uncontrollably at the sight of Sony's Jazz Hands.

For you lifers, sorry about the name change. As I set it up, ESPN told me the name for that group had already been taken. Personally, I suspect the title may have been intercepted. But that's just me in my 2015 dark place talking.

Enough of the melodrama, here's the deets: click the link below and enter the password, create your entry as well as your entry's name; the bowl selection is "straight", so you're only picking winners (no spread and no confidence points to negotiate); feel free to share the link (preferably through this blog post, or look for the tweet and/or bookface posts. Then just sit back and watch how badly I beat everyone!!

PASSWORD = thehumanfund

If you're unfamiliar with the celebration of Festivus you are still allowed to enter my bowl pool. But you first must watch "The Strike" episode in its entirety (check your listings for TBS "Seinfeld" reruns) or simply use his clip to get you started.

Merry Christmas y'all!

It was a hard couple of days. So look, we'll get to all of it. But not now. Tyler talked me off the ledge yesterday morning. Then I spent 10+ hours in a Tahoe loaded down with women and gifts and dirty laundry and the miracle of GPS. I got home, poured a drink and then Mac laid some truth on me.

I love you all. Truly. I really, really do. You'll never know how much.

So whatever you are into celebrating this time of year, please allow me to join you. Life is just too damn short! Let's take a couple days off and then get ready to go medieval on Grantham's worthless ass.

But back to the spirit of the season...Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Give your family a hug from Uncle Bernie!

Bowl season requires no decoration

But it does require your entry into the pool. So if you've been distracted by the tinsel or if you've been busy carrying a picket sign outside H&H, you're down to your last day to get those picks in.

That's right! The bowls start tomorrow with a full slate!

"Where's your Christmas spirit? An eye for an eye!"

Don't let the tinsel distract you. Only five more days to get your entry into the bowl pool.

Why I hope the Belk Bowl takes Georgia.

Really glad Tyler did the heavy lifting on this earlier in the week. No one ever knows how the bowl selection will play out, but this year there is the added element of sorting through the CFB Playoff seedings and subsequent top tier bowl shake outs. Georgia is nestled somewhere below the SEC "access bowl" tie-ins, the Orange and Peach.

Make sure and follow @BelkBowl on Twitter. Their tweets
are both stylishly dressed and classicly humourous.
The most likely destinations appear to be the Outback, Belk, and Music City bowls. If I'm being honest, once eliminated from the national spotlight all I care about is winning against whoever seems most willing to provide that extra W to close the season. A bowl win means nothing in the grand scheme of things. But it's nice for the senior class to go out with a win and can build some momentum in off season workouts and recruiting. Sure, blog hits take a dramatic January drop after a bowl win as opposed to a loss, but that's a side effect I will always gladly accept.

Back to opponents, the most intriguing is Notre Dame, which is who Yahoo has us playing in Charlotte's Belk Bowl. It would be a great matchup for Georgia's current team, and it would be a nice appetizer to the recently scheduled home and home between the two schools. ESPN is split with Schlabach and McMurphy's pick. One has us in the Outback against Minnesota (sure, ok.) and the other has the Dawgs in Orlando against Wisconsin (no, no thanks.) I'd rather not play the Badgers, plus I don't think the Citrus is a likely landing spot. But you never know I guess. Rounding out the projections, CBS agrees with Schlabach on Tampa versus the Golden Gophers (sure, ok.) and Phil Steele also has us in Tampa, but against Maryland. The plus side there would be slapping the Terrapins silly, but the downside is travelling to Tampa.

Looking at it from a personal side, anywhere but Jacksonville again is fine with me. But the only destinations I'd consider travelling to are to watch the Belk Bowl or the Music City. Nashville's a great trip. Good nightlife, and great food. Plus, it's not too far. With a 3:00pm kickoff you could even make it a day trip from the Atlanta area. But, Georgia plays in Nashville every other year. So I'd much prefer a trip to Charlotte, especially to watch the Dawgs tarnish those Golden Domes for sixty minutes.

A lot of fans like going to a bowl game in Florida, for the obvious reasons I guess - attractions, the (sometimes) warmer weather, beaches. And there are a lot of Dawg fans down yonder that deserve a reward for putting up with the gator jorts for 12 months every single year. However, I think a lot of Dawg fans would travel to Charlotte as it is within a few hours of Athens, is a new/different location, and, if projections hold true, would offer Georgia an interesting opponent.

Lastly, make sure and come back next week to enter in the Fifth Annual Bowl Pool - Festivus4TheDawgNus. Selections come out Sunday. So the pool should be up and ready for your entry on Monday. Happy Bowling y'all!

And the winner is...

Congrats to Kdawg77 on winning the Fourth Annual Festivus4theDawgNus Bowl Pool. He finished ahead of Truupster and a host of third placers to take home the much sought after t-shirt. Kdawg's grievances were aired and his feats were strong that day my friend!

Send me your email and t-shirt size (bernie dawg AT gmail) and your prize will be in the mail before the strike is over. I promise.

Thanks to everyone for playing. We'll drag the pole out of the crawlspace again next year!

The tradition of Festivus4theDawgNus begins in Albuquerque!

Tomorrow! At 2:00 PM! Time has all but run out for anyone looking to jump into the bowl pool.

It's free to enter and you might even win something if your picks are good enough to pin Frank Costanza in the Feats of Strength.

A total of four bowl games tomorrow. So get your picks in!

Monday's Meatloaf - when bean bags backfire

Any of you older siblings ever look back fondly on some of the pranks you pulled on your brothers and/or sisters? You know, to help prepare them for Life's pitfalls. It's noble work, if you are born into it.

Courage can be fleeting.
Anyway, one of my favorites was to take these decorative bean bags Mom had lying around the house and carefully place several on the blades of the ceiling fan. Then I made up some excuse for my younger sister to stand in the middle of the room. In a pinch this one usually worked like a charm - Just stand there and look at the fireplace. I think Santa is coming...do you hear the sleigh bells?

Nevermind that it was June. But once the kid was placed appropriately I flipped the switch (note: for maximum effect, important that you toggle the fan speed to it's highest setting prior to setting the scene). The blades carry the weight for a few seconds before dumping their payload. Then you have a toddler who's eyes go from extreme wonderment to OMG What is happening?!?!! The ceiling!! It hates me!!

Then you wait an hour or so and set the scene again. Great fun. Until three decades later when your own kids trap you in your own scheme. I guess I had bragged about the prank once too often. My 11yo can be quite mischievous when she wants to be. And the 9yo can be an eager lemming to her older sister's misdeeds. To make a long story short, the master was done in my his own brilliant blueprint of deviousness. He cowered under a blanket to shield himself from the torpedoes of doom. He cried PLEASE!! Make it stop! THE HUMANITY!!! Their laughter tortured his ears from a safe distance, and he knew, should he survive the destruction, they would spend years reminding him of this pitiful moment when he was reduced to such an awkward display of distress.

On a positive note, at least I didn't need a diaper change after the entire affair. In another couple decades this story may have an entirely different ending.

Today's Ingredients
- Don't forget to register for the bowl pool. You don't want to miss out on the feats of strength!
- Groo is helping us get reacquainted with the Cornhuskers.
- Over seven minutes of Running Back U highlights? Thanks Greg!
- Tyler takes a moment to look forward to the playoffs, takes a left turn and finds a case study for what not to do.
Will Muschamp Left Bloodied After Scuffle With A Chalkboard- Of course, the Mack Brown saga has taken a turn since this was posted, but MaconDawg had some grand ideas for the soon to be former Longhorn coach in his next chapter.
- After what's been an anti-climatic yet still very intriguing year for him, Kimberley looks at what's next for Jadeveon Clowney.
- Feeling a bit reminiscent today, so the last few ingredients for today are some of the things I've earmarked and saved throughout the season. Outside of the arena, these are the things I will remember most about the season. I'm sure I missed a thing or two. So feel free to add in the comments.
- One of the brightest spots on the periphery of the actual action were the week to week videos produced. This one tugged a little harder at the heartstrings.
- Another masterful video, but fraught with ignominy.
- Maybe Muschamp should have Jeremy Foley schedule more chalkboards.
- If you're not into the whole brevity thing...In one single post just before the season began, Dawgden combined two of my favorite things to watch - the greatest movie to ever hate the Eagles and SEC football. It was a transcendental experience in Dudeism man.
- Lastly, I think we can all agree that Blutarsky hit the nail on the head when he shared his words and specifically this video as an encapsulation of why we're here. (addendum - he's at it again today)

The last person I'd like to recognize here is a commenter - tbone226. Way back when we were preparing to play at Auburn with a lake, I mentioned and provided a loose description of the picture below. I had been unable to locate it with Google. tbone made up for my lack in internetting investigation. Thank you again sir! That was one of the highlights to my blogging season and I look forward to using that picture again next August.
And the 2013 winner of Best Picture is....
That's a wrap for today Reader. Beware of flying objects. And giggling children.

Fourth Annual Bowl Pool - Festivus4theDawgNus

Hey! You're here! Another Festivus Miracle!    Join Bowl Pool

Welcome, newcomers. The tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances. I got a lot of problems with you people! Pick your bowl winners and maybe you'll win this year's Festivus t-shirt. Choose one winner per bowl, no confidence points and the spread is for informational purposes only. Deadline to enter is the start of the first bowl - Dec 21, 2pm.

So join in the fun again this year as we spend nearly three weeks and 35 bowl games to determine who picked them best. Once again, you'll walk away with a stylish t-shirt if you win.

Happy Festivus!
"It has a certain understated stupidity."

What is Festivus? Glad you asked.

Although I've already heard Florida has accepted their bid to the Inaugural George Costanza Urinal Cake Bowl. Congrats to Coach Boom!

EgginDawg takes Festivus4theDawgNus

It was a close call. And much like the actual BCS game, it was decided well before Alabama finished beating Notre Dame. EgginDawg ended up edging out Evil Richt's Goatee after Arkansas State defeated Kent State late Sunday night in the GoDaddy.com Bowl. Everyone...yes, all 60 entrees had Bama winning. So much like Monday night's contest, the results of that game were a perfunctory matter.

As for me, I rallied. Having back-loaded all my confidence points on the later bowl games I was able to work my way up from 60th at one point to 13th where I finished. But like everyone else, fell short of the impressive 519 points that EgginDawg put up. So he will get the Festivus t-shirt to wear proudly next bowl season as he defends his title...and while he airs his grievances.

Kudos to Evil Richt's Goatee for entering the final stretch in the lead; Morton and rtdew for staying in contention much of the three weeks, JaxDawg for an impressive late run...and La Jolla for being at or near the top the entire time. As well as bothering me daily about who was cheating.

See y'all in December when we'll get the pole out of the crawl space for the fourth year!

Bowl Season is upon us!

You know those people that stand in line to purchase a phone? You know the ones that get up at all hours of the morning to shop on the day after Thanksgiving? Or how about the ones that wear orange to football games?

Well, I would never do any of those things. But I recognize that those people must have a certain level of excitement in them to help them cross that line towards insanity. And that's how I feel about bowl season. Are many of the games just a glorified crap sandwich? Sure. But I love college football, ergo I love being able to tune in each day and watch some of it for the better part of a month.

So, it all starts tomorrow at 1pm with the Gildan New Mexico Bowl from Albuquerque between Arizona and Nevada. And that means there is but a few hours* to enter the third annual bowl pool here at Bernie's Dawg Blawg, Festivus4theDawgNus. It's a "confidence" pool, so just select your winners and how many points to assign to each pick. Winner gets a Festivus t-shirt.

What do you mean by confidence points Bernie? And why is the spread listed on each bowl? Am I picking based on the spread? Also, while we're at it, what is a "spread"? Glad you asked:

  • A spread is the number one team is favored over the other. The spread for the CapOne Bowl is Georgia -10.5, so the Dawgs are favored to win by that many points. They'd have to win by 11 points for a bet on Georgia to win.
  • However, our pool isn't based on the spread. It's a confidence pool. You pick each winner and assign a number of points to each based on the confidence you have that you're right. So I picked Georgia to win the CapOne Bowl and gave it a 35. In other words, that is the pick I'm most confident in, and if I'm right I'll get 35 points for that selection. If I'm wrong I'll curse a lot and get zero points.
  • So the spread that is listed is just for your information and to help you in making picks.
Thanks. Lastly, what is Festivus? Infidel! Leave! At once! You obviously don't read my blog or have better than average skills in remote control usage. Therefore this pool is too deep, no picks for you!
The rest of you...to enter, CLICK HERE and then submit the password - thehumanfund. After that, all that is left is to make sure the beer fridge is full.

*You have until the day after Christmas to enter, but any picks prior to that date would be locked already, which greatly hinders your chances at the t-shirt but still allows you to display some feats of strength.

Monday's Meatloaf - No longer numb, but I might still vomit

It's taken a week or more, but I don't think I'm completely numb any longer as to the ways things unfolded in the Georgia Dome against Alabama. I've heard a lot of people describe the level of frustration and displeasure as they walked away from this year's SEC Championship. I only recall a deep ache in my heart and then just being kind of dazed, anesthetized. Weary from walking up to the summit, then turned around just as we thought we were traversing the peak, I just remember looking at all the Crimson Tide fans and thinking, "This is our reward? To walk through this madness, get in our car and go home? With each and every shout of 'Roll! TIDE! Roll!' like a dagger in my chest, this is what we get?"

Pippa posing a few
paragraphs too early...
Normally after a loss, each day you wake up a little easier and light of foot. But such was not the case last week. Each day was agony and Saturday was brutal as we didn't even get to go to Athens to heal together with another game.

But I'm ready to move forward. I'm taking off the robe and slippers I've been wearing for eight days and putting on clothes. I've brushed my teeth and am acting as if there is life after the 2012 SECCG! I'm not humming a tune yet but there's one gathering in my head. I don't want to push it, but I may even (gasp!!) watch a few minutes of the Monday night football game tonight. However, if there's a random deflected pass at the line of scrimmage I might need an elephant tranquilizer to deal with the anguish. So I'll enter that threshold carefully and steady of foot.

So, I guess what I'm saying is I'm coming to grips with losing that amazing game. I'm ready to embrace the idea of watching my team put everydamnthing out there on the field and still walk away with nothing but nightmarish memories. I think I can actually stand the thought of moving forward with life after the 2012 season.

Because what we witnessed nine days ago was, for all intents and purposes, the national title game. We can all agree on that quite easily. The game in Orlando is a celebration, a matter of bridging the gap between what happened December 1st and what will happen next August 31st; a holiday reward for the players and fans of one of the best teams I've had the pleasure of rooting for in all of my days.

That shower and shave felt good. The memories of what happened didn't wash away...but I'm no longer just numb.

Today's Ingredients
- And a lot of credit for me being able to move forward this morning goes to this video ecdawg posted yesterday - We'll be back!
- Heading down to Orlando? Tyler has a lead on some bowl packages as well as a giveaway.
- But the coaches won't need any help getting to Orlando after their bonuses kick in.
- Buck moved forward pretty quickly as he's already looking at the changes in store for Grantham's defense next season.
- Speaking of moving quickly, Spencer Hall already has footage from the "contest" in Miami.
- In Knutsville things are moving quickly towards a very merry Christmas. Even though CCRider doesn't think Santa Claus will last long in the HillBillys' chimney.
- Blutarsky has little sympathy for Texas Tech's AD. However, I feel very sorry for the Bearcat grad assistants.
- Looking for more coaching news? Mr. SEC has all that and more in his headlines from yesterday.
- If you watched Johnny Manziel make history Saturday night, you really only have yourself to blame. I did all I could to help you.
- Have you joined the third annual bowl pool, Festivus4theDawgNus? Password is - thehumanfund. Kruger's flask is running low. Bowl games start Saturday!

Alright, so while I was dazed and confused, evidently it was announced that Pippa's sister is preggers. Everyone's all worked up that there will be a royal dirty diaper in the kingdom sometime next summer. But in truth it appears as if things have already gotten dirty.

The royal embryo seen here flipping off
the duchess' digestive tract
The duchess...oh, am I supposed to capitalize that? I don't know, being American and all I don't really give a flip on the formality of it. Especially when the newspapaers across the pond can just print stories about Prince William's wife vomiting, and her vomit that has been vomited all over top of the old vomit that she vomited earlier. It's enough to make me vomit, which is about 349 less times than Duchess Kate has vomited in the past week it seems. (btw, it wasn't until just now that I realized that the word "vomited" only has one "t" and not two. The more you know huh?)

Yep, Pippa's sister has something called hyperemesis gravidarum. Mrs. Bernie had that with our youngest. But I don't guess Prince William and his fancy ascot will be mopping up all of his wife's vomit. Which I did, time after time. And all while caring for the two year old, working 40 hours a week and feeding my queen one and a half saltines each evening. And I don't suppose it'll take the royal subjects six months and 349 more piles of vomit to convince the doctor that it might just be time to give her highness something more than a pat on the back and a roll of the eyes from the nurses. "By the way, your copay is $20 Mr. Bernie."

Thanks. Thanks a lot. No Prince Willy probably has doctors lined up ten deep as well as chambermaids and stewards and butlers and younger brothers to hand the mop to. Because God Save the Queen!! and all should Lady Kate be asked to hold her head over a toilet, er commode...or is it just a bloody john? "My lovely Kate, bearer of my son the future King of England and most likely a smashing good cricket mid-wicket, or a jolly good gully, could you perhaps retire to the powder room to wretch your guts out me lady? I am desperately trying to type out this tweet to Harry. Oh! And on your way darling, what is a hastag any way?"

#royalbaby causes #lovelyDuchessKate to throw #pricelessvase
at the heir's head. Then she #vomits on his #spongebobslippers

Have a lovely day Reader! I hope it's vomit free.

Monday's Meatloaf - a local cougar brings Festivus Miracle!

Festivus has begun. I wasn't completely sure until I saw so many grievances being aired last night during the utter bullshit BCS show. I had come to accept the fact that we would be left out in the cold long before, but when I saw the matchups I really wanted to rain blows upon someone.

But I sense that we really need to move forward y'all. So this post is designed to be light, if not mildly entertaining and high in good things like sodium, random acts of curbside kindness and some trans fats. With all that being said...I don't like to brag, but...

Hot pickles, sexy sammich
When you have a birthday AND get your order in the Chick-Fil-A drive thru paid for by a hot cougar nice lady who has a clear, unobstructed rearview mirror, well...you know you're living right. Truthfully, I guess it's possible my mysterious lunch time "fan" was impressed as much by my Georgia vanity plate as my easy-on-the-eyes demeanor. After all, it was SEC Championship week and she couldn't have been a Tech grad, being a female and all. But hey, who're we kidding. The good Lord has blessed me with a lot more than a functioning keyboard and Blogger login credentials if you know what I mean.

And the dude at the window with the headset was just as taken aback as I was. Each time I insisted on paying him for my meal he just shook his head and said "She wants to provide you with a meal that's just as hot and made to order as you are."..."The lady in front of you already paid for your lunch sir."

What do you do at that point? Catch up to her car, force her to roll down the window and throw a wadded up $5 bill at her? Hire a private eye to check her license plate for any prior unsolicited acts of kindness? Get back in line so that you can pay it forward to that creepy guy in the royal blue Miata?

No, I just honked, waved and rushed home to tell the wife what had happened. After all, she needs to be reminded of the treasure that she has in her husband. I just wish I had ordered that peppermint chocolate chip milkshake. Mrs. Bernie loves those things.
    Today's Ingredients
    - So...did anyone have any more questions for Coach Richt?
    - If you missed it earlier, the Huskers are already spitting kernels at us.
    - Over at The Grit Tree Lugnut is working through the stages of disappointment like the rest of us.
    - Nice to see Georgia fans aren't the only ones supporting Richt in defending his players.
    - And if you're looking for a few rational thoughts on the "non-spike controversy", Chris Brown's write up is as thorough as they come.
    - Surprisingly, Spurrier chimes in from his usual December armchair and disagrees with Richt.
    - Groo has no regrets. But he does have a video of the team returning to hundreds of gracious students.
    - The Lady Dawgs disposed of Tech on the hardwood yesterday.
    - Have you "liked" the Herschel's Famous 34 Pub and Grill's BookFace page yet? If not, I urge you not to piss him off.
    - Whoa. LA Tech thought there was a limo outside when they left the Independence Bowl at the alter.
    - In the latest Curious Index, Run Home Jack might have an explanation for Bielema's recent weight gain.
    - Lastly, isn't it about time the SEC seriously considered just seceding from the NCAA altogether? At least in football? Some of you lawyers out there need to work up a petition or something. That game in the Dome WAS the national championship game. At least in my mind.

So it's time to get the pole out of the crawl space. Festivus4theDawgNus is currently being prepped for its third annual run. AND THIS YEAR THERE'S AN ACTUAL PRIZE!!! No "fake donuts" this time around. Winner gets a bonafide Festivus t-shirt shipped right to your door. All you have to do is outscore everyone else at the table. More details will be forthcoming on Wednesday. For now, consider these rules carefully:

    • watching every bowl game is neither necessary nor encouraged
    • no bonus points can be awarded showing Mark May your feats of strength
    • t-shirt does not come in Charlie Weis' size, which gives this pool a decided schematic advantage
    • be careful with the lighting on the porch
    • a perfect score for all 837 bowl games gets your name in the Bernie's Dawg Blawg banner for a whole week as well as a replica of Kruger's flask
    • tinsel is strictly prohibited
So come back in a couple days and we'll kick this thing off in earnest. The bowls may be loaded with stale, distasteful matchups but that doesn't mean we can't make the most of them.

Have a great week Reader. And if you're behind me at Chick-Fil-A one day soon and find the super awesome blogger in the car in front of you paid for you to Eat Mor Chikin, don't read too much into it.

    • Belue to Scott. Here's my review and here's a link to the website. Also a MUST HAVE whether you lived through the 1980 season or you've simply heard about it in stories and Munson replays.
    • Munson Bobbleheads - is there a better way to remember the great Larry Munson than to have him sitting on your desk whenever you need that pick me up? You can get it at Glory Glory stores as well as other places.
    • Anything from Amazon - I've heard the guys at From Hedges to Hardwood shamelessly plug their Amazon tab on their podcasts. Figured I might as well do the same. If you're ever buying anything from the seemingly all inclusive website, why not use my button over there on the right and allow Amazon to cut me a commission? Especially if it's something as snazzy as a Kindle Fire!!
While you're shopping for your favorite Dawg, go ahead and buy yourself one of these items too. Or wait and see if it makes its way into your stocking. And if it doesn't, you can just gift them to yourself. It'll be another Festivus Miracle!!
