Todd Damn Grantham and Kirk's ghost

I shy away from over using the words love and hate as much as 90% of America does. But I truly love the way Coach Grantham goes about his business. His fire and brimstone approach has my old, tired ass ready to lay the wood mydamnself. I think most Dawg fans feel the same way. Sure, there's been bumps along the way: those that were offended by the use of f-bombs on a tackle football sideline, the choke sign and making little Jimmy Franklin piss his pants just a little.

But for the most part I think the Bulldog nation has taken to our defensive coordinator like a mallard takes to water. He develops players, puts players in positions to make key plays, attacks the line of scrimmage, recruits better than Hugh Hefner, couldn't care less about seniority...doesn't smile. In the Cliff Notes version, he's awesome.

However, let's slow our roll. There's a laundry list of reasons why we shouldn't be clamoring to kiss his feet so quickly.

  1. Boise scored 35 after an off season of preparation.
  2. Michigan State scored when they had to.
  3. He drinks Bud Light.
Ok, well that's all I could really come up with after 16 and a half minutes of thinking. But my point is this: does Todd Damn Grantham really want all this praise and adoration we're falling over each other to give him? As many sacks, turnovers and highlights as his defense created last season, what do you think is the one thing he keeps replaying over and over in his mind this off season? My money is on Kirk Cousins marching all over his guys.

Last season was like a really nice steak...with an unfortunate bite of gristle at the very end. No matter how much we chew, it's just not at all palatable. Kirk Cousins' ghost is haunting Grantham this off season. But by now we've at least come to expect that he is cooking up something bigger and better for our next meal.

This coming season will be the telltale sign whether the defensive scheme of the 3-4 will bear the promised fruit. We must also hold the offense to a higher standard in that if they can control the line of scrimmage with the running attack supplemented by he passing plays thereby allowing the defense to remain fresh by establishing ball control and dominate the time clock, UGA will have a great season.

Hopefully, Grantham's Defense will improve on his SEC worst 39 points a game average against ranked teams. He has mastered the art of inflating his numbers with inferior competition. Overall, against ranked teams, he's worse than Willie.

Coach Grantham has done a good job in a short period of time with a lot of necessary changes........I personally have never check on this,  but I would guess that most schools don't do as well against "ranked" teams as they do against "unranked" teams. That must be Bobo's fault.

Grantham is a great defensive coach.  The lack of offense in games and the offense turning the ball over in bad field position put the defense in bad situations (Carolina, Mich. St., LSU, etc..).  Remember Ogletree got hurt early in the Boise St. game.  If he doesn't get hurt who knows.  he was the starter for a reason and the back up had to go in and produce against a good team first game of the season.  I don't care how good a defense is, when they are on the fiel 70% of the second half they will get tired.

If only the offense played with the same intensity as the offense. In all of our losses Mike Bobo and Aaron Murray kept the other team in the game consistently. If this staff was let go today, I am convinced CTG would go on to either the same or higher level and Mike Bobo would be an oc or offensive coordinator at GSU at best. Their again, he could go to work for Don Leeburn in sales.

Grantham ranks 11th or 12th in the SEC, against ranked teams, in fumbles recovered, sacks, tackles for loss, and points scored against. Bama ranks much higher against ranked teams in these areas.

When it comes to "real" competition, Grantham is the worst defensive coordinator in the SEC.

And it's not even close.

Grantham averages 38 points a game against ranked teams.

Alabama, only gave up 7.7 points a game against ranked teams.

Grantham was the worst DC in the SEC in 2012, as far as points go against ranked teams, Kirby Smart was the best.

If the staff was let go, Grantham would never work another day in his life on an SEC team after finishing last in nearly every major category, against ranked teams.

On point as usual BD! The first game and the last two were unchewable, blah! The points of light in between those saw us trending toward "Junkyard" status. The Big Dawg is very hungry and his next meal really needs to be bigger and better. Hope the S/C agenda includes dealing with the weight of expectations, that's the heaviest weight there is BD. GATA

Just wondering if Joe Smaha is related to the #LostLetterman Jiggy Smaha? He has to be right?

Wow...I wouldn't wish that hell on anyone...and I know first hand...

The last time I checked....Bobo's offense's stats have been padded by facing the weaker opponents, too not to mention the number of times that the defense handed his terrible offense the ball at midfield and all they got were field goals...or missed opportunities.

Last time I checked, Bobo's offense has finished in the top 5, 4 out of 5 years in scoring against ranked teams.

Grantham finished LAST in the SEC in scoring against ranked teams.

Then again, Derek Dooley is passionate too and at the bottom of most stats against ranked teams.
