But really the only difference between what happened this season and the way things played out in 2007 is that Bama was afforded the opportunity at a rematch in the national championship game while Georgia went to New Orleans to play in the Sugar Bowl...against Hawaii. Sometimes it pays to have the national media on your side.
Then again, the thought of Coach Richt cuddling with the likes of Mark May and Herbie turns my stomach a bit.
As for college football... (sniff, sniff)

Thanks for a good job this season Bernie!
You know I love ya, Bernie, but that comparison is not really correct.
Our 2007 Dawgs were blown out by the Volunteers and lost at home to South Carolina...Alabama's only loss this year came to one of the top two teams in the country, in overtime.
I was pointing more to the fact that we were in the argument for the BCS title game but the talking heads declared you couldn't play for the title if you didn't win your conference.
Thanks for reading!
Not only that, at least in 2007 Georgia was co-champion of the Eastern division, but lost the tie-breaker to Tennessee and therefore could not play in the SEC title game. This year, Alabama was in second place in their own division. That should be more of a disqualifier than Georgia faced in 2007. Again, media was inconsistent.
Did LSU deserve to play for the national championship that year after losing to Kentucky?
My point wasn't to compare 2007 LSU to 2007 UGA...it was to compare 2007 UGA to 2011 Alabama, which is what was in the original post.
But, to your point, 2007 was a weird year...basically, everybody had two losses, as I recall (too lazy to look it up) so at thatp point, it really was about comparing resumes, and LSU had a championship on their resume and we didn't. But I said at the time that if we really wanted a shot at the national title, then we shouldn't nave lost to UT and USCe.
We may never agree on this, because I am one of the few who actually likes the current BCS system. One of the main reasons is because I think it is the MOST effective (though not perfect) method of rewarding the entire body of work. I don't like the idea of a playoff that only rewards the team that is playing the best at the end of the year (see March Madness, MLB, etc). I like the idea that, if you are serious about winning a national title, you have to at least APPROACH every game as if it is a must win, because you never know which game it's going to be that costs you everything.
I know, I'm in the minority..
I don't think there should be any tie-ins between winning your division/conference and playing for the national title...they are two totally different things. I disagreed with that argument then, and I disagree with people who try to apply it to Alabama now.
People might claim you to be in the minority, but I doubt you are. I'm not fond of the system we have. But, when I really think back to how the BCS has evolved and am truly honest about it...I think what I'm most tired of is trying to "fix" it or correct it for one year just to have a new dilemma come up the next season.
That being said, I think if CFB goes to a 4 team playoff (which I'm hearing should come out sooner rather than later) it could be a big step in the marrying of two ideals: 1) letting the games play out on the field and 2) continuance of the bowl system.
Now if we could only convince these idiots to do away with polls until October...
Nope, and they also lost to Arkansas at home if remember correctly
This signing is monumental for our Dawgs! On film this young man dominates.Forever hopeful these HS phenoms pan out as projected. With Jarvis on one side and this cat on the other...could be fun to watch! GATA
Love the Blog as well Bernie, but I agree that the two aren't the same. You can't just say "both didn't win conference - HYPOCRISY!!!11!" despite a few pundits using that lame justification (Nebraska and Oklahoma have both gone w/o winning).
What's important is that that year, we would have been going INSTEAD of the SEC champ (LSU) rather than in ADDITION to the champ as Bama did this year. I know we were hot at the end of '07, but apart from winning the SEC, LSU's losses came in overtime while we got crushed by UT.
If you presented the resumes blindly to almost any football fan, they would pick LSU. We didn't belong in the title game that year under the current system (which I would like to see expanded to a plus one - but that's another post), and it's time to admit that.
Good point about it being instead of as opposed to in addition to.
After getting all historical here with the rear view mirror, I smell an additional post looking forward.
Looking forward to it - thanks for all the recruiting updates.
